The Challenge

The client, through his data capture of final effluent collected over the years was consistently failing on total suspended solids, free oils and greases and COD(s).

The site was under pressure to implement measures to bring the sites consent to discharge levels back into tolerance.

The consequence of doing nothing would put the site on to a Trade Action Plan with their Water Authority leading to fines and discharge failures being made public.

The challenge was to ascertain what process in the multiple stages of treatment could be changed or altered to give effective treatment.

The plant had enough capacity to treat the daily flows and loadings so what was causing the treatment to fall over?

The Solution

The site process cooked meat with various marinades and operate 24/7.

The day was spent looking through every aspect of their treatment process from chemicals to equipment and its effectiveness.

A summary of our findings was discussed with the client at our closing meeting with a priority of actions to implement immediately with further changes to be actioned at a later stage.

The Result

• The solids capture in the DAF has improved considerably due to the dissolved air quality improvements creating a more uniform, thicker sludge blanket.
• You can visually see the white water across the whole surface area of the DAF within the sludge blanket
• The carryover of solids was reduced massively.
• The quality of the final discharge is a huge improvement.
• The flocculant was changed.
• Chemical dosing points changed.
