Nitric acid is a highly corrosive, colourless mineral acid.

Nitric acid is used for the production of ammonium nitrate, a major component of fertilizers. It is also used for producing explosives like nitro-glycerin and trinitrotoluene (TNT) and for oxidizing metals. It is commonly used in electrochemistry and is also used in the manufacture of pyrotechnics and steel etching.

Nitric acid can also be used to inhibit the build-up of scale in pipework.
